Marfa, Texas

27 Apr

Over the Easter weekend, we traveled for the first time to Marathon and Marfa, Texas. I had never been out west before, so I was super excited, and the Railroad Revival Tour was the highlight of an awesome weekend escape. We stumbled across the train rolling into Marfa to an excited crowd, and later saw the three amazing bands–Old Crow Medicine Show, Mumford and Sons, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros–perform a spirited concert at El Cosmico, the smallest and most intimate show of the tour. We stayed in a historical, haunted hotel in Marathon, soaked by the pool in Marfa, made some fun, new friends, and took in the overwhelming and chilling wildfire damage while driving through Alpine and Fort Davis (and narrowly missed the spreading fires in Balmorhea, which had just been evacuated when we arrived).

We fell in love with this part of the state, that I am sure I will visit again soon.

Before we left for the trip, I picked up a toy Holga camera to play around with (in addition to the other cameras I am usually lugging around: my Super 8 moving film camera, my Canon Powershot, and the 8 megapixel phone in my camera… as well as sometimes Mike’s Super 8 and our HD camcorder. Yeah, we travel light!). I’ve never shot with medium format film, so I have some learning to do on shot composition! Everything was much wider that I expected from the tiny viewfinder! The light leaks and vignetting of the camera are super fun though as I’d hoped. The whole set is here and most of it is below. We also shot two cartridges–100 feet–of Super 8 film while traveling through West Texas, so I will send those off to the L.A. lab this week and will share them here in the days to come…
