Nostalgia Film Fall Update

22 Sep holga photograph super 8 videography austin nevada arizona

We have been staying busy at Nostalgia Film as summer turns into fall! We recently shot a yoga tutorial for the web for the lovely Maya at Breathe Eat Dance Evolve, which we cannot wait to finish editing to share with you.

We have been booking weddings for spring and fall of 2012, and are entering the fall 2011 wedding season. We still have dates available, including some availability in 2011, so please contact us.

We also have some sweet family Super 8 film footage we shot earlier this month, which we hope to share soon. We were lucky enough to travel to Nevada and Arizona, and see the Grand Canyon for the first time. We have some HD footage of that to share, too, and I have a couple of Holga photographs from the trip, below, complete with lots of fun light leaks and effects.

We took a quick trip down to Port Aransas on the Texas coast a couple weekends ago. I took along my Holga camera.

We recently got to spend a weekend with friends out at the cabins where we got married on the San Gabriel River in Liberty Hill, Texas. I had just found a vintage Diana camera (from the  ’60s probably) on eBay, and I took it along to capture some images. There is still a little water in poor drought-stricken Texas as you can see… just a little bit.

I’m using today’s August Break photo post to share our sweet rescue pups‘ faces with you, and to tell the Central Texans and Austinites among you how to find your own new furry friend this hot August weekend!

Marfa, Texas

27 Apr

Over the Easter weekend, we traveled for the first time to Marathon and Marfa, Texas. I had never been out west before, so I was super excited, and the Railroad Revival Tour was the highlight of an awesome weekend escape. We stumbled across the train rolling into Marfa to an excited crowd, and later saw the three amazing bands–Old Crow Medicine Show, Mumford and Sons, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros–perform a spirited concert at El Cosmico, the smallest and most intimate show of the tour. We stayed in a historical, haunted hotel in Marathon, soaked by the pool in Marfa, made some fun, new friends, and took in the overwhelming and chilling wildfire damage while driving through Alpine and Fort Davis (and narrowly missed the spreading fires in Balmorhea, which had just been evacuated when we arrived).

We fell in love with this part of the state, that I am sure I will visit again soon.

Before we left for the trip, I picked up a toy Holga camera to play around with (in addition to the other cameras I am usually lugging around: my Super 8 moving film camera, my Canon Powershot, and the 8 megapixel phone in my camera… as well as sometimes Mike’s Super 8 and our HD camcorder. Yeah, we travel light!). I’ve never shot with medium format film, so I have some learning to do on shot composition! Everything was much wider that I expected from the tiny viewfinder! The light leaks and vignetting of the camera are super fun though as I’d hoped. The whole set is here and most of it is below. We also shot two cartridges–100 feet–of Super 8 film while traveling through West Texas, so I will send those off to the L.A. lab this week and will share them here in the days to come…

L.A. California Dreaming

30 Mar

We spent last last weekend in L.A. for the conference, The Power of Super 8 Film. We learned a lot of new tips and tricks, met a lot of nice filmmakers from all over, and saw a lot of inspiring Super 8 films. I hope to write a longer blog about it soon when I get a chance, but thought I’d post a few photos of the trip in the meantime. We shot a couple of rolls of Ektachrome 100D Reversal at the Griffith Park observatory on a gray, rainy day, too, and the Santa Monica Pier at sunset, that we’ll share as soon as we get it back and edit it.

These urban coyotes at the base of Griffith Park may have been Michael’s favorite part of the trip… (Title inspiration courtesy of the Honey Badger, of course!)
